MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

"Opportunity"

"Ability is of little account without opportunity" - Napoleon Bonaparte

As Quality professionals and potential company leadership team members, it is imperative that we not only seek to identify internal improvement opportunities that contribute to enhance the customer experience and benefit the companies profitability, we also need to stop and consider our own personal growth prospects.

The combination of the ASQ national headquarters and local chapter 703 offers many training & education events which increase your working knowledge and value to your current employer, and presents additional value-added when seeking new employment opportunities.

"A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds" - Sir Francis Bacon

Webster defines opportunity a couple ways:

A situation or condition favorable for attainment of a goal

A good position, chance or prospect for advancement or success

A very few folks we may know always seem to be lucky, get the right break at the right time or appear to be blessed by the Gods. Most of us lesser mortals must continue to struggle to achieve our dreams - or do we? A highly successful application is networking with your peers at the chapter dinner. Meeting new associates and maintaining old contacts is one of the best ways to network within the San Diego Quality community.

"If you do not hear the sound of opportunity knocking, build a door" - Milton Berle

Others may create their own opportunities by exceeding expectations, taking on additional responsibilities and making their value better known to decision makers. No matter what the vehicle used, creating a positive personal sense of awareness and expanding your opportunistic horizons which will lead to increased prospects.

"Opportunity's greatest enemy is mediocrity. The greatest way to exercise an opportunity is to choose to do something very well. If you choose to do something that is indistinguishable from its competition, then your future is not your own. If you offer something that is truly outstanding (maybe a product, or a feature, or maybe the way you approach your work), you have excelled to a degree that most others won't. I am not talking about uniqueness - I am talking about excellence. Excellence is the proper response to opportunity.

Excellence, in fact, creates opportunity. If you are very good at what you do, credible, open and curious you will have more opportunity than you can exercise". Gregg Oliver ASQ Quality Visionary

"A blind man can hear opportunity in the wind" - 22nd Rule of Ferengi Acquisition

This Month's Meeting

"Application of Reliability Demonstration Testing to the Product Development Life Cycle"

Rick Ramirez, CRE
Cardinal Health, CTS

(858) 458-7253
Rick.Ramirez@cardinalhealth.com

Pre-meeting-clinic this month on "Justifying Your Job"; lead by Kim Niles

Abstract

Reliability Demonstration Testing (RDT) is an effective process to identify and predict top field failure modes and for predicting product Annual Failure Rate % (AFR%) during the product development cycle. An efficient RDT process allows product development teams to be pro-active during design development rather than re-active after the product release to costly design warranty issues in the customer field.

This presentation discusses where and how the RDT process fits and is developed within a product development Reliability/Quality plan applied to medical instruments developed at Cardinal Health's Alaris Products Division. Five key RDT product development cycle areas are reviewed:

  1. Component or Subsystem RDT process

  2. System Reliability Block Diagram (RBD) Model

  3. System Level RDT process

  4. Product reliability metrics and warranty/repair cost impacts

  5. RDT process feedback from 1st year field warranty/repair data analysis.
