  • Region 7 New Year Message from Director Holly Duckworth:  ASQ is a professional society with over 100,000 individual and organizational members. We are also a member-led organization, with over 1,700 member leaders. For each position on the leadership team for your section, elections are held each year. Nominations for these positions can begin very early in the calendar year as ASQ's fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30. If you've never considered running for a section leadership position, you may want to check it out. Some positions require minimal involvement, others require significant time and support. Some positions are easy to learn, others are more complicated. In all cases, your professional skills will enhance the member leader role, as well as the volunteer leadership enhancing your professional skills! There are also several perquisites for being on the leadership team. Each year, a Leadership Training Conference is held for those on the section executive committee. This coming year our conference will be in Palm Springs, California on April 18, 2009. The section can sponsor your attendance at this event. There are also deep discounts for member leaders at the ASQ World Conference, including free pre-conference training and networking sessions. Member leaders are often called upon to volunteer help at divisional conferences often offering the benefit of free attendance for helpers. So there are many Society benefits to becoming a member leader, beyond the sharpening of your own leadership skills. Would you please consider raising your hand this year to try a member leader role? Start with an easy role. You'll soon experience the pride in leading this prominent professional society.

  • Other society news:  American Electronics Association (AeA) and the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) have merged to become The Technology Association of America.

  • Fellow News:  Time for you to upgrade to ASQ Fellow.  As a newly elected ASQ Fellow, our webmaster Kim Niles will be given complimentary registration for ASQ's World Conference on Quality and Improvement plus banquet tickets, lunches, etc.  See more about the conference Monday May 18 - 20, 2009 at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota at http://wcqi.asq.org/index.html

"Corporate Politics: The Elephant in the Conference Room; Naming It, Reframing It, and Taming It"

Grace Judson

Pre-meeting-clinic this month on "The Nature of Influence"; lead by Gregg Oliver

Abstract

This talk will focus on three components of corporate politics: Naming It, Reframing It, and Taming It with details as follows:

NAMING IT

Corporate politics. Everyone loves to hate it. It’s seldom discussed openly. People and organizations claim it doesn’t exist – oh, no, not here!

That’s why I call it the "Elephant in the Conference Room" – it’s big, it’s often clumsy and destructive, and everyone tries to pretend it’s not there.

We’ll start out by naming the Elephant for what it is: interpersonal politics. And we’ll talk about why it seems so unpleasant and overwhelming.

REFRAMING IT

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to choose between your integrity and working within the political system to succeed and achieve. Using case studies drawn from my clients’ experiences and my own 20+ years in the corporate world, we’ll explore an alternate view of corporate politics that helps you act with integrity and compassion, becoming a true leader in your organization and a role model to your peers and employees – and even your managers.

TAMING IT

Finally, we’ll look at four tools you can use right now to be more effective in your political workplace. These are tools that allow you to "play the game" while retaining your integrity and staying true to your values.

You’ll find these tools helpful in shifting the political paradigm for yourself and others – and the surprising thing is, you’ll find that your relationships outside the office benefit as well.

  • Learn about the futility of arguing with reality, so you can free your energy and attention and take action.

  • Understand the power of surprise, so you can start creating change almost immediately.

  • Discover the unspoken secret that’s behind uncooperative or troublesome behavior – and what to do about it – so you can remove the roadblocks and get things done.

  • Recognize and learn to find the three truths in every situation, so you can shift from "win-lose" to an honest (not just lip service) "win-win" position that engages others and creates results.
