Last Month's Meeting

Last month's joint meeting with the ASQ Biomedical Division and ASQ Palomar Section 708 went very well.

The speaker was James E. This Month's Meeting

Our May meeting went well (see details here).  Our June meeting will be as follows:

Jul.11, 2006

"Lean & Change Management"

Commander Al Desmarais of the U.S. Navy's Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC)

Albert.Desmarais@navy.mil

Abstract

Lean is now a very popular series of tools and techniques meant to help a company create change toward reducing waste, increasing throughput, lower costs, higher quality, etc.  Note that with every attribute of Lean we use a verb that describes action taken ... or change that occurs (i.e. reducing, increasing, lower, higher, etc.).

Change is easy for some to accept, hard for some to accept, and can be confusing for the rest of the group of people undergoing the change.  Sometimes change can be quite funny when unplanned reactions are completely unexpected.  Sometimes change can be quite dangerous.  There are ways to mitigate these difficulties.

This talk was recently well received at SDSU as follows:  "He was extremely well received by our guests, many of whom had already experienced the challenges on the "people" side of a lean implementation." - Liz Sondhaus, Ph.D.; Director, Corporate Learning Professional Development, College of Extended Studies; San Diego State University.

Speaker Biography

Al Desmarais, a 19-year veteran of the US Navy, currently acts as the Value Stream Manager for Southwest Regional Maintenance Center; the Navy organization responsible for all maintenance for Navy ships in San Diego.

He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1987 with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science.   He also completed Navy Nuclear Power training and holds a Master’s degree in Software Engineering from Southern Methodist University.  He is a graduate of the Lean Certificate course at San Diego State University and has spent the last 3 years working to institute continuous improvement philosophies, based on the Toyota Production System, at Southwest RMC.

He has served on 5 ships, the last, USS Constellation, as Materiel Officer for Task Force 55 during Operation Iraqi Freedom.   His experience as a military leader and recent transition to Lean manufacturing trainer/ facilitator has provided him a unique perspective into the human element of process improvement. His unique and interactive seminar style reinforces the sometimes painful lessons he has learned about workforce culture and human behavior.
