MESSAGE FROM THE EDUCATION CHAIR

"Call for Instructors"

Section Members & Honored Eavesdroppers,

I recently had a very successful meeting with National University's John Dooley and staff. We will be offering the top four courses from last month's survey starting in August / September at one or two of their facilities in San Diego (Kearney Mesa / La Mesa)

All the details will be worked out by July 15th so keep an eye out in my future messages for details of schedules and classes, etc.

We still need a few instructors to teach these classes so I'm putting out a call for instructors.  Instructors will need to sign up through an adjunct instructor web portal that National University has but for now please just email me with your interest.

Instructors are well compensated. We are currently paying more than most local colleges pay their instructors on an hourly basis.  In addition, instructors receive 0.15 re-certification units (ru's) for every hour they teach. There are many other reasons to teach such as helping others, widening your comfort zone, giving back to the community, etc. Minimum qualifications for being an instructor:

  • Hold an ASQ certification in the area you are interested in teaching but in some cases other forms education or experience may be accepted depending upon the educational board (i.e. MS degree in Quality, special experience, etc.).

  • Have prepared a syllabus, lesson plan, class notes, and have sent it to our review board

We will have an education committee meeting in early July to review and agree on the schedule.  I will notify every one of the date and place when I get all the information.

Regarding the adjunct instructor web portal, you will need a resume in notepad text format, a work history file available to copy into the online box, and a list of at least 3 references to input in the questionnaire.

Other Announcements

  • Congratulation to the newly certified members for CQA Arline Amores, Byron Bailly, Juliana Harrigan, Sheri Knight, Elizabeth A. Siggins, Jennifer Terrell, and Christina Yazgulian.  For CSQE Steven H. Babb, Mark Naylor, and Nancy Pasquan.

  • There will be a new way to sign up for the fall refresher courses coming up in the next Education news letter.

  • The San Diego Quality Conference committee is in need of volunteers.  Please contact our Chair Doug McCloskey if you are a member who can help out.

  • Our section research project with the San Diego County Office of Emergency Services in an effort to address the repetitive problem of wildfire in San Diego needs more volunteers.  Contact our chair Doug McCloskey. The commitment is about 2 hours per month. Additionally, committee members receive 0.125 Recertification Credits per month for being on the committee.  Please contact Doug McCloskey at dm@grantrothbard.com  for further info and to join the committee."

  • New rates for early RSVPs for membership meeting are $5.00 Discount plus 1 extra raffle tickets.  Also that another color of the ticket will be given to people who are eating dinner. Early RSVP's are considered more than one week before the meeting.

  • Several new jobs have recently been posted on our jobs page at http://www.asqsandiego.org/jobs.htm ... and keep sending them in.

  • Don't forget to check out our sponsor pages.  Great courses and products being offered!!  See links at the bottom of this email.

  • Don't forget to check out other local events on our local event calendar

I look forward to hearing from you and or seeing you soon,

Sincerely,

Dave Clinard

Education Committee Chair

"Influence vs. Pursuasion & the 9 Laws"

by Gregg Oliver, Section Officer

Persuasion is something that occurs between just two people, is generally unidirectional, and deals more with emotion than reason. Influence is something that occurs between groups larger than just two people, can be multi directional, and deals more with reason than emotion.  There are 9 laws of persuasion, read on for more ...

Organizers of the upcoming Lean and Green Summit have made available a well written lean and green glossary. The glossary is a living document and will evolve to support the growing lean and green movement.  A very similar Lean Glossary can be found on the same site without needing to give them your email address.

Workshops, Modular Courses, Tech Clinics, Study & Discussion Groups

  • Workshops:  No workshops currently scheduled.  Our workshop coordinator is looking for speakers, interesting topics, and a meeting location.  Contact Jenny Gossett (CQA-CBA), Director of Quality; e-mail: asq703workshop@yahoo.com

  • Modular Courses & Tech Clinics:  No modular courses currently scheduled in lieu of pre-meeting technical clinics.  15-30 min tech clinic speakers needed.  Can you share a model, method, or tool with us?  Perhaps a student paper or a case study from work?  Contact our Ed Chair or Programs Chair as applicable.

  • Study & Discussion Groups:  Our section supports both ASQ sanctioned and informal study and or discussion groups.  There are currently none of these groups actively going on but there are biweekly planning meetings underway for formal discussion groups in our area soon.  The Food & Drug discussion group and the Six Sigma discussion group planning committees are well underway.  Tom Pyzdek is leading the Six Sigma discussion group.  Both groups hope to begin holding meetings in our area next Fall.
