MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

"Kim's Trip to ASQ Headquarters"

Our webmaster Kim Niles was lucky enough to have a VIP tour of National ASQ headquarters recently.  I've asked him to tell us about it.  Here's his report:

+~+~+

Kim's trip report to National ASQ Headquarters.

This past January, I just happened to be headed to Milwaukee Wisconsin on an unrelated business trip when Lynda Nicely, Media Relations Administrator (lnicely@asq.org) with ASQ called me asking for a phone interview to see if I'd qualify as a potential medical device "expert".  Apparently ASQ is developing groups of related contacts to support National publicity needs as they come up.  Since I've had a few related publications, I was a good lead for them to pursue.

While I was totally shocked by the odds of being in Milwaukee on the same day that they wanted me for a phone interview, I kept calm and said, "sure, but why don't we make it an in person interview... I'll come to you".  That was fun to say ... <smile>.

Here's a photo of the ASQ building.  The building used to be an old department store attached to the mall that still exists.  It now houses a Residence Inn and ASQ headquarters on floors 1,3, and 4.  My hotel was a couple blocks away but also attached to the mall so while the weather was in about 10 degrees outside, I walked comfortably to ASQ via the mall.

The first floor holds a nice lobby, a typical conference room, a large meeting room, and the Hall of Fame.  Here's a photo of the Hall of fame below.  I was surprised to see a couple names of friends (Dr. Douglas Montgomery and Tom Pyzdek) and also of Keki-Bohti who's four day class I once took on Shainin techniques, patterned after his book "World Class Quality".

My luck continued as I arrived just in time to catch the tail end of the new QP release party.  I met with one of the editors and had a custom coffee drink made for me.

After the party and my interview, I was treated to a full VIP tour of the entire building by John Ryan- Sr.PublicAffairs whose main job is to meet with politicians to promote ASQ as a resource for them.  Here's a photo of him on the third floor next to the hall of past presidents.

There was an exhibit of Deming's beads that was so cool that I forgot to take a picture of it.  I've been teaching Deming's bead exercise incorrectly all these years ... <smile>.

There was also an exhibit on Shewhart's SPC development letters and tags he used to create SPC charts.  Here's a couple related photos.

Here's a photo of me in front of Eli Whitney's first gun to have interchangeable parts (need to check notes on specifics...).

If anyone is interested in more details and or wishes to comment, contact Kim at kim.niles@cox.net
