"Fiscal Year End Approaching"

ASQ SD Membership:

Just a reminder that our fiscal year end is approaching.  Our section fiscal year is from July 1 to July 1.  Last month you elected new officers that will start July 1.

This past weekend several of our officers traveled to Palm Springs for "officer training"... lots of fun meeting with other officers from all over region 7.

Later this month is the ASQ World conference in Minneapolis MN.  Every year we send one or two officers to that as well.  See our newly updated calendar page for a link and other information.

Doesn't all this make you want to become an officer?  Contact me if you are interested in helping out in some way.  We need someone to help plan Quality month in October for example.

This Month's Meeting

Our March meeting went well (see details here).  Our April meeting will be as follows:

May 12,

2009

"AS9100C and the Role of Configuration Management"

Joe Serrantino

joesorrent@aol.com

213-880-3902

30 min. pre-meeting-clinic this month on "How to Succeed in Quality: Part 1"; lead by Kim Niles

Abstract

The AS9100C Standard, drafted by the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) and put into practice in early 2009, was altered from its original definition “Aerospace – Requirements” to state “Requirements for Aviation, Space and Defense Organizations.” Now, in addition to including the complete text of ISO 9001:2008, the standard also includes definitions and notes in response to stakeholder requirements for aviation, space and defense organizations.

To guarantee customer satisfaction, today’s manufacturing organizations must produce safe and reliable products that meet or exceed customer expectations and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, such as ISO 9001:2008. The globalization of industry, coupled with the diversity of regional and national requirements, has complicated this objective. As such, manufacturers are becoming increasingly challenged when it comes to purchasing products from their global supplier bases. On the flip side, these supplier bases face many difficulties associated with delivering products to multiple customers, each with varying quality standards. This is why the IAQG has developed AS9100C.

One of the most common problems in today’s business environment, are the changes in our global technology and worldwide communications systems, particularly with the tech-savvy Generation Y just now entering the workforce. The United States, in particular, has undergone significant evolvement from an industrial nation to a service nation. The outsourcing of manufacturing overseas has created a scenario where manufacturing organizations, now more than ever, must have a thorough understanding of customer, regulatory and statuary requirements, because in the end, they are ultimately responsible for products or service liability. One of the ways to maintain this control is through Configuration Management, which ensures that product design; materials, composition, or processing conforms to the original intent, from delivery through the entire product lifecycle. And, if modifications are needed to meet evolving technology requirements, or are necessary to the application of the product or service, Configuration Management can ensure that the changes are integrated with existing systems, and updated on the original drawings and technical documents. This also relates to assigning liability to the user, manufacturer, designer or concept visionary in the case of disaster or mishap.

This presentation will address the changes to AS9100C; how AS9100C can be integrated into existing business models; and, how Configuration Management can be applied within the manufacturing sector to ensure that the requirement of AS9100C are being met.

Regardless of their current situation, organizations must learn how to adapt AS9100C and the principles of Configuration Management to their evolving business conditions, and this presentation will outline the rationale and method of implementation. The audience will learn how the changes to the ISO 9001:2008 quality management system impact AS9100C, and how the expansion of Risk Analysis, Special Requirements, Critical Items, Key Characteristics, Project Management, Risk Management and Configuration Management within AS9100C can impact organizational training and 21st Century business practices. Following the presentation, each attendee will have a more thorough understanding of the rationale behind AS9100C, and a clearer understanding of why its important to modify existing quality management systems to comply with AS9100C.

Sorrentino speaks at American Society for Quality (ASQ), American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT and Society for Manufacturing Engineers (SME) conventions, and conducts workshops and seminars specializing in implementing new concepts and training to meet the changing globalization needs.

He works with more than 30 organizations in the Southern California area alone. Sorrentino and his team of highly qualified consultants are experts in quickly assessing management systems and processes and recognizing problem areas, bottlenecks, and waste. Sorrentino himself is recognized within the corporate sector as one of the few consultants who not only tells you what needs to be done, but also shows you how to do it.

Sorrentino resides in Dana Point, California, with his wife, Laurie Zagon, a well-known artist and the founder of Art & Creativity for Healing, Inc., of Laguna Niguel, California. In his spare time, Sorrentino enjoys surfing, sailing, and spending time with his grandchildren and his dog Uno.

Pre-Clinic

This month for our pre-clinic, Kim Niles (ASQ Officer & Fellow, MSQA, CSQE, CQE) will review 30minutes of job justification models in his pre-clinic series on "How to Succeed in Quality".  All of the following models were developed by Kim while writing a book by the same title due for publication later this year.  A nominal group technique (NGT) will be used to determine which one of these five models and related group exercises will be covered during this pre-clinic:

  1. Candidate Selection Pugh Matrix Pentagon:  Five metrics commonly used to facilitate judging your fit in the organization.

  2. Job Justification Triangle:   You may be the most qualified person for the job and still lose or not get hired for it due to any one of these three major reasons.  Every position has a different mix of these justification reasons.

  3. The XEAM Model:  Ways of looking at the various types of needs others have of you at work or home.  Those above you, below you, and beside you all have different expectations of you.

  4. The AAMO Barrier Breaking Model:  Ways of determining the root cause of human situation related barriers in order to break through them.

  5. The Quality Professional Roles & Strengths Model:  While various psychological tests exist for how we all think (4 - 34 different types of thinking depending upon the test), some ways of thinking have shown to benefit quality professionals better than others due to the types of roles we play.  This model attempts to model those connections.
