MESSAGE FROM THE EDUCATION CHAIR

"Multi-voting Results"

Section Members & Honored Eavesdroppers,

During this month's membership meeting pre-clinic, Kim Niles led the meeting attendees through a brainstorming, affinity diagram forming, and multi-voting exercise.  The purpose of the exercise was two fold as follows:

  • to assist National ASQ Six Sigma discussion group efforts to hold meetings in San Diego on topics our members would like to see.

  • to review brainstorming, affinity diagram forming, and multi-voting as tools we all should be using at our jobs.

The results were as follows:

  • Categories of topics "affinitized" from the large survey data base responses provided from the Six Sigma forum were as follows:

    • Tools   (14)

    • Program implementation related topics (Six Sigma / change; 12)

    • Reliability related topics (8)

    • Design related topics (6)

    • Project related topics (2)

    • Industry specific Six Sigma topics (1)

    • Benchmarking / case study topics (1)

  • Since tools was the top hitter, we broke that category down as follows:

    • Statistical tools (13)

    • Sampling (9)

    • DOE (6; design of experiments)

    • FMEA (6; failure mode effect analysis)

    • VSM (5; value stream mapping)

    • DFX (5; design for x)

    • Data analysis (4)

Next month we plan to break down statistical tools.

These results will be given to the Six Sigma Forum discussion group (officer Kim Niles is on the committee).

"Reliability Eng. Part 13 "

(pdf file 121kb)

The previous section on modeling and prediction described reliability modeling of basic series and parallel systems and some more complex system structures. In this section we will review component/system redundancies in general.

Slides from last meeting

by this month's speaker Roy Webber, SSBB

There is an undeniable and ominous danger facing organizations that possess critical and unique knowledge essential to their operations.  As the baby boomer generation approaches retirement age, organizations can expect to lose 30 to 50% of their workforce within the next five years.  This presentation on “Preserving Critical Knowledge” identifies the impact losing critical human knowledge will have on organizations, the steps that must be taken to preserve it, and the systems that should be developed to capture and make available the critical knowledge that will be either lost forever or require re-creation at significant expense and time.
