MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

"Cost Analysis"

WE NEED YOUR HELP PLEASE

‘Ask not what ASQ Chapter 703 can do for you, but what you can do for our Chapter!’

Currently the Chapter loses about $1,000 per dinner meeting each month.  The leadership team has decided not to increase the $20 or so dollars you pay for the Feast of the Month and meeting room, and will continue to subsidize the balance owed to the hotel.

I am soliciting suggestions for a new location.  Needs to be centrally located, somewhat easy to find, tables so members can eat a catered (err, cost effective) dinner, and large enough to hold 50 – 75 people.

So if you work at a moderate to large company that would be willing to host the monthly dinners, or if you are just driving by a place and looks appealing, please contact Manijeh Farrokhi at mfarrokhi@pulseeng.com or myself, Brett Carter at bcarter@overlandstorage.com.

Please help us to better serve you.

"Preserving Critical Knowledge"

Pre-meeting-clinic this month on "Quality News Activities - Six Sigma Discussion Group Affinity & China and the Olympics Discussion"; lead by Abe & Kim

Abstract

There is an undeniable and ominous danger facing organizations that possess critical and unique knowledge essential to their operations.  As the baby boomer generation approaches retirement age, organizations can expect to lose 30 to 50% of their workforce within the next five years.  The workforce professionals in rapidly advancing technical areas gather knowledge and experience which is frequently not recorded or shared.  The individuals who will retire are the most experienced in the organization and many will take with them knowledge that is not replaceable.

This presentation on “Preserving Critical Knowledge” identifies the impact losing critical human knowledge will have on organizations, the steps that must be taken to preserve it, and the systems that should be developed to capture and make available the critical knowledge that will be either lost forever or require re-creation at significant expense and time.

Specific examples will be provided of organizations that have experienced the loss of intellectual capital and the impact on their organizational performance and competitive positions.  Systems and methods that would have preserved the critical knowledge will be provided.

Leaders must recognize the impact of losing critical knowledge and take immediate proactive steps to prevent it.  The “Preserving Critical Knowledge” presentation will show them the path.
